Foundational Studies: Pencil, Charcoal, Chalk, Ink, Value Studies,Pattern, and Texture

The foundation of all art is the ability to interpret thoughts and observations through drawing. In Drawing 1 and Art 2-D, I practiced and have excelled in many of these techniques. Since I have a history in equestrian studies, many of my pieces include equine subject matter.

Spring 2013, This piece is a charcoal, chalk, and pencil rendition of In continuation, The Rear View by Peter Paul Rubens . This piece was displayed in the Brevard Community College, now Eastern Florida State College, spring art show and I won the Liberal Arts Award. I entitled my piece A Familiar Frame.

Spring 2013, This is a still life drapery study in chalk.

Summer 2013, This Art 2-D assignment demonstrates one point perspective and the juxtaposition of contrasting or unusual elements. The pen and ink drawing pictures the combination of a city and a glacier environment.

One of my favorite techniques is collage. This Art 2-D piece demonstrates the careful and well thought out planning that I use to make all of my pieces the best they can be.  I started out with a picture of my facial profile. I sectioned the picture, drew a negative version of my face, and then diagrammed the light, medium, and dark values of the photograph. After this, I spent time combing through countless magazines to find black and white text to represent the photograph's value pattern.

Summer 2013, In Art 2-D, I was instructed to create and design frame from three organic lines and one straight line, use pattern, and demonstrate texture. The piece in the upper half of the photograph is a permanent marker pieces that uses circles and triangles to create an organic pattern. The piece in the bottom half of the photograph is crafted from permanent maker, crayon, pen, pencil, and feathers to show a close-up of an African Grey Parrot.
